Getting to know your employees goes deeper than spending a night out in town with them. Sure, this may give you more insight into who they are. But have you considered experimental questionnaires? Listing items to see whether they may favour a wallet or tablet holder over the bottle of wine you've pondered on as a Christmas gift? Perhaps they prefer relaxed social gatherings where they are known to be the guy flipping the braai grill rather than goofing around with a beach ball.
